Winter highlights

Man, so many great highlights from the last few weeks! First, I got to fly out to the island of Little Diomede on a Blackhawk helicopter. We went out on a medevac, to pick up a patient. It was amazing, and the flight was absolutely stunning (but cold, so my phone died quickly, and I have no pictures of the Northeasterly winds blowing wisps of snow across the icebergs and choppy Bering Sea, all orange in the sunset glow of the winter sun! I only wish I could show you all these images of beauty that are indelibly imprinted in my soul). And in the midst of this beauty, a medic yells to me over the roaring blackhawk engine, and I remember that out there, on a remote island, a woman is in pain, awaiting help. It makes me appreciate the incredible resources that we have out here in bush Alaska to get to take care of patients. Normally, there is a helicopter that flies out to Diomede more frequently, but it is undergoing maintenance in Anchorage.

Because of maintenance on the main chopper, there haven’t been any flights out to Diomede for awhile, and the village is starting to run out of supplies. Also we had been trying to get another baby in to be seen for about a week, so we picked the baby up on the flight, since we were out there anyway, and didn’t know when another flight could get in. See this article about it on the KNOM website:
Three Weeks, No Flights: Diomede Residents Stranded without Mail, Food Deliveries

Then, we found out that our Love Story is being featured, not only on our local radio station:Β KNOM Story 49, but ALSOΒ Alaska Public Radio: Coffee and Rolls
And the best part? Me and Dave get to listen to these stories with my love, on our fourth date… On Valentines Day!

I got to hang out with these lovely folks, and have an almost-sleepover (I snuck out after the kids were asleep).

And the days have been so beautiful, with the light coming back so fast! I got to walk way out on the ice shelf and explore.

  1. Oh Shana, I never tire of hearing your story. I sure hope I can come to the wedding and meet him and be in love with him too! πŸ™‚ What’s so beautiful to me is this meeting together of two complete people. It’s a testament to waiting until you’re ready…not that I guess we ever know. I married my person so young and didn’t have the same sort of knowing. I discovered he is my soul mate along the way. We almost had to push each other apart in order to see each other more clearly…”whole against the sky.” – Rilke. I love you. I am in love with Alaska and life and magic and possibly fate because of you. Thank you for that. You help crack me open a little so some light gets in. πŸ™‚

    • Wow, thanks Heather! Yes!!! You have to come to the wedding! πŸ™‚ It’s going to be so so so beautiful–I’m just about to send out the invitations and the website with info. πŸ™‚ Awwwww, that’s so beautifully written! Yeah, I do feel like we are soooo lucky to be complete and yet still be soooo similar! He and I are in line with pretty much everything, and I’ve never had that before! I love your love story! Yours inspired me when I was sitting in your living room the last time with you two telling me your love story, I really admire both of you and your awesome family! I love cracks, and I love imperfection, and I love Leonard Cohen. πŸ™‚ Take care and hope to see you here in Alaska this summer! πŸ™‚

  2. I heard your wonderful Love Story on the radio all the way down here in Southeast Alaska after reading your post (happy tears and laughter on this end). Then I heard the story about the Blackhawk helicopter medivac, wondered if you were on board, and sure enough you were! What an amazing life adventure you are having! Congratulations on your engagement and thank you for the great work that you are doing.

    • Awwww, thanks, Jo! It was so much fun to tell our story. πŸ™‚ Yeah, the blackhawk medevac was a fun, amazing experience, and luckily everyone was ok! Thanks for the congrats!!! Enjoy the light returning! πŸ™‚
