“It’s hard to see your own people hurting so much, when there’s so much strength and beauty.”
This quote is from the documentary that my friend Sara chapman just told me about, The Silence:
It’s about the sexual abuse scandal that happened here in Nome and the villages we serve here in the Norton Sound. The pain and suffering at the hands of church leaders will make you weep, and the grace and strength of people like Elsie will awe you. It explains perhaps a large part of the alcoholism and abuse that people are trapped in.
I love Elsie’s courage, what she did and what she said “It’s hard to see your own people hurting so much when there’s so much strength and beauty.”
One of the victims in this film is one of my patients, and he is one of the strongest people I have ever met. I hope for him complete healing.
