Gambell Medical Field Trip, Day 1

We flew out early this morning on Bering Air, in the darkness, to the village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island.

Emergency Medical Services Patient transport! These get hitched to the ATV. There are no ambulances here, because there are not very many roads, and the gravel is too difficult to drive on with a vehicle. Even the ATVs get stuck in the beach gravel and snow.

They have the doctors dive right in to start seeing patients! We worked hard today seeing lots of people. At one point in the day, one of the health aids called me to “Come quick and look out the window!” She excitedly pointed out that the snow was softly falling straight down…something that they apparently never see, because usually the winds blow it sideways! :)

***Later in the evening***

Many people in the village make beautiful bone and ivory carvings. Throughout the day and after hours, carvers would come in to sell their works of art: OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
